The Jungle Pokémon Set—originally known in Japan as Pokémon Jungle (Japanese: ポケモンジャングル)—holds a special place as the second main expansion of the iconic Pokémon Trading Card Game. Officially released in English on June 16, 1999, and in Japan on March 5, 1997, this set continues to spotlight beloved Generation I Pokémon. Uniquely themed around the lush landscapes reminiscent of the famous Kanto Safari Zone, Jungle introduced players and collectors alike to a vibrant collection of Pokémon that beautifully captured the spirit of exploration and adventure.
A standout feature of the Jungle Pokémon Set lies in its intriguing variation between the Japanese and English releases. While the original Japanese version contained only 48 cards, Wizards of the Coast expanded the English set to 64 cards by introducing non-holographic versions of the previously holo-exclusive rares. This creative move not only increased the collectability of Jungle booster packs—making holographic cards less guaranteed—but also added an exciting element of suspense for collectors hunting rare and valuable cards.
Collectors particularly cherish the rare printing variations within the Jungle Pokémon Set, including one accidental yet fascinating inclusion: the coveted 1st Edition Promo Pikachu mistakenly found its way into some 1st Edition packs, instantly becoming one of the most prized collector’s items from this expansion. Additionally, in Australia, the Unlimited Jungle set distinguished itself with unique red-lettered “Pokémon” branding on booster packs and deck boxes—a deliberate design choice aimed at deterring counterfeit products. These captivating nuances, alongside fan-favorite cards such as Scyther, Snorlax, and Vaporeon, continue to make Jungle a treasured gem in the legacy of Pokémon card collecting.
