Train On with Pokémon TCG: Generations!

Celebrate 20 years of Pokémon with the Pokémon TCG: Generations expansion, covering every stage of a Trainer’s journey, from the choice of a first partner Pokémon to the most Elite of Trainer battles. Featuring Pikachu, Snorlax, Ninetales-EX, and Jolteon-EX, plus Mega Charizard-EX, Mega Blastoise-EX, and Mega Venusaur-EX, the Generations expansion is a power to be reckoned with! Train On.™

Generations Pokémon Set is a unique XY Series expansion released in celebration of the franchise’s 20th Anniversary. Rather than a standard booster launch, Generations builds on Japan’s PokéKyun Collection Starter Pack (released February 27, 2016) and draws heavily from classic Generation I art and nostalgia. In Japan it debuted as the スターターパック Starter Pack during the XY BREAK Era, while internationally its cards appeared in specially themed 20th Anniversary merchandise rather than ordinary booster boxes—making it both a tribute and a treasure hunt for long‑time fans.

Unlike regular expansions, Generations packs (each holding 10 cards: 8 from the core set plus 2 from the Radiant Collection subset) were only available inside Mythical Pokémon Collections and Red & Blue Collection boxes. Each Mythical Collection—rolling out monthly throughout 2016—bundled two Generations packs with a Full‑Art promo card and a collectible pin featuring one of eleven Mythical Pokémon. The Red & Blue Collections added sculpted figures or jumbo cards alongside four Generations packs, while later releases like the Generations Elite Trainer Box (July 2016) and Super Premium Collection: Mew & Mewtwo (September 2016) let players further customize their anniversary haul.

Delving deeper, the Starter Pack itself echoes the original Base Set’s random charm: split into a 27‑card core section (including either M Venusaur‑EX or M Charizard‑EX plus supporting Trainers and Energy) and a 33‑card secondary section grouped by evolutionary line. None of the cards bear rarity symbols, underscoring the pack’s beginner‑friendly design, yet hidden secret cards (like those in the Blastoise‑version pack with its exclusive Chansey coin) keep collectors on their toes. Across global anniversary events, special holofoil variants and Radiant Collection RC‑numbered promos slipped into distributions, ensuring that Generations Pokémon Set remains a standout celebration of Pokémon’s past, present, and future.
