The wonders never cease when you play the Pokémon TCG: Diamond & Pearl—Secret Wonders expansion!
The Secret Wonders Pokémon set arrived on November 7 2007 (Japan: July 5 2007 as Shining Darkness), the third expansion of the Diamond & Pearl era. Its 132‑card lineup dives into Sinnoh’s deeper mysteries and the movie‐inspired clash of Dialga, Palkia, and Darkrai. Pack art featuring Gardevoir, Gallade, Magmortar, and Lugia hinted at the power inside, while the twin theme decks—Lavaflow (Charizard) and Powerhouse (Electivire)—offered instant dueling kits for newcomers.
On the competitive front, Secret Wonders became a meta cornerstone. Gardevoir (Psychic Lock) and Gallade (Psychic Cut) formed the fearsome “GG” combo that dominated 2008 tournaments, shutting down Poké‑Powers and slicing through bulky foes with precision. Weavile made Dark decks tick by converting Benched Pokémon to Darkness type for explosive damage bursts, and Supporters such as Roseanne’s Research and Professor Oak’s Visit provided unprecedented consistency. Two LV.X finishers—Gardevoir LV.X and Honchkrow LV.X—rounded out the arsenal, each inheriting prior attacks while adding game‑swinging new abilities.
Collectors have their own list of wonders. The set hides a small suite of holo “error swirls”, most famously on early‐run Charizard and Lugia cards, where the foil layer misaligns to create crescent patterns prized by variant hunters. The lake‑guardian trio appears together in a single panoramic illustration across Uxie 16, Mesprit 17, and Azelf 18, forming a seamless lake scene when placed side by side. Even the commons carry secrets: flip Nidoran♂ 97/132 under a black light and you’ll spot a faint Poké Ball watermark— a printing quirk unique to the first wave. Between tournament‑defining cards, movie tie‑ins, and hidden artistic flourishes, the Secret Wonders Pokémon set lives up to its name, rewarding both players and collectors each time a pack is cracked.
