Discover dozens of never-before-seen Pokémon, Alola forms of some familiar favorites, and new ways to battle in the Pokémon TCG: Sun & Moon expansion!
Sun & Moon Pokémon Set is the first main expansion of the Sun & Moon Series, debuting in Japan on December 9, 2016 as the dual Collection Sun and Collection Moon expansions, and rolling out in English on February 3, 2017. This landmark release introduces Generation VII Pokémon—drawing from the vibrant world of Alola—and stars the mighty Legendary duo Solgaleo‑GX and Lunala‑GX. As the foundation of the Sun & Moon Era, this set blends fresh gameplay innovations with the tropical flair of the new region, inviting trainers to explore Alola’s islands in TCG form.
At the heart of the Sun & Moon Pokémon Set is the debut of Pokémon‑GX, powerful evolutions whose single knock‑out yields two Prize cards. Each Pokémon‑GX showcases a signature GX attack, delivering game‑changing effects or massive damage—though you can only unleash one GX move per match. These cards arrive in three dazzling print runs: Regular, Full Art, and Rainbow Rare, each with a glossy sheen and dynamic art that spills beyond the frame. The set’s updated card template features sleeker evolution bars, reshaped Weakness/Resistance boxes, and the streamlined “Pokémon‑GX” rule box replacing the classic Pokédex entry.
Beyond GX, Sun & Moon Pokémon Set revamps the overall design: black card borders, water‑web holofoil backgrounds, and modernized energy symbols tie the collection together. Trainers can chase over 140 cards, including fan‑favorite Alolan Forms—like Alolan Vulpix and Alolan Exeggutor—and build around starter lines Rowlet, Litten, and Popplio. Booster packs grew to 12 cards each, now guaranteed to include a Basic Energy, ensuring every pack crack powers your deck. Special tins and blister assortments featuring pins and code cards add collectible flair, while the Japanese split into Sun and Moon mirror the paired‑games concept.
Collectors and competitors alike will relish the set’s hidden gems: look for full‑art Trainer cards that shimmer with UV‑spot effects, unique Rainbow Rare GX cards that catch every ray of light, and elusive secret‑rare variants tucked into booster boxes. The change from the classic Sheen Holofoil to the intricate Water Web pattern gives every holo pull a fresh sparkle, and the inclusion of Alola’s Trial Captains and Totem Pokémon nods to the games’ island‑challenge spirit. With its blend of strategic depth, nostalgic callbacks, and tropical artistry, Sun & Moon Pokémon Set reigns supreme as the gateway to Alola’s adventures in the TCG.
